What are you looking to do?

If you really want to build a site from scratch and don't know anything about PHP and mySQL you'll probably want to get yourself a good book.

There are also a number of good sites offering tutorials etc.

Have you considered starting off with something like RavenNuke?

It will help you get a fully functioning site up more quickly and then you can mod it to suit your needs.

RN is a CMS (Content Management System) which includes forums, news, surveys, FAQ etc. An example of the new version which will be released shortly can be seen here:

I would suggest you download a copy of XAMPP, which will allow you setup a test site on you computer and then install RN. You can then have play and see what it does.

Also have a read of the forums here and you will a lot of information about RN, PHP and mySQL.

You will need to install Apache as well, as this will act as the server.

Basically if it is all setup properly you should be able to type localhost into your web browser and you should you should be presented with a page saying XAMPP for Windows, thats assuming you are using Windows?

Have a look at the demos to check everything is working OK.

Once you are satisfied everything is working OK, try installing RN. There are extensive installation instructions with the package and also on these forums, so have a read of these before installing.

These are explained in the XAMP package. You are in need of a little "Homework". Read the Default Pages in XAMP and it will explain it all.

I'll throw my 2 cents in despite what inflation has done to it. Search Amazon on PHP MYSQL. Get the book by Welling and Thompson. Or go to Borders and buy it and get yourself a double expresso and sit there reading it. Spend a week going thru the book so you understand how this stuff works and what's behind it. Otherwise you are flying blind and trying to fix problems you have no background to fix. Then go back a few posts in this thread and get Xampp working and try a few simple programs. Then proceed with Ravennuke.

The best way to learn is get reading as fkelly suggested. Get a good book, read the forums and read the RN installation instructions. We've all had to do it at sometime and it is the best way to learn. If you are then still having problems please post again and we will be happy to help. Wink
