Just before I lodged a news article to my site and as I am admin I got a email notification.

The email contained all the html tags as I used them to present the article but for some reason the html was not displayed in the email... rather the tags if you know what I mean...

this is a example of what I got in my email:

shouldn't the email show the formatting?

No, the email is exactly as it should be, which is a protection to you in that if someone were able to somehow post a malicious news article (with malicious code that is), you will not be "hit" by it when you open it in your email.

It is just a protection mechanism. The email notification really is just that, plus to give you an idea regarding the content.
