Redirects for old files

Instead of deleting old files its sometimes much better to redirect these files because they are already indexed by search engines and to prevent a lot of 404 errors use .htaccess
E.g.:

Redirect permanent /old-forums_backend.php http://www.my-site.de/forumsbackend.php

mmm indeed susann...but using the backend real and previous name would have been just as effective..

You are right sometimes I think to complex.However permanent redirects works like this. Smile

What would you do if already both files are indexed by accident ?

well its not the way to work...you know that.. Wink

just use the new file....any 404 on your site will tell your visitors something has changed.
in my case it took google about 4 months to wake up...
so using your current files without any redirects is recommended...
