I've just come across this application

I'm interested to hear feedback from past, present, and even future users. Thanks!

PunBB is written in PHP and thus requires the

Why PunBB?
The idea of PunBB was first born when I needed a discussion board for a website I was working on. After an exhaustive search, all the boards I found were either over-featured or too graphic for my needs. I wanted a package that
* was fast.
* had a simple layout and design.
* was easy to administrate and moderate.
* didn't output huge, non-valid, (X)HTML pages.
* had source code you could read and understand.
To my dismay, such a forum was nowhere to be found. Thus, I started working on PunBB, or just Pun as it was called back then.
Developing software to "please the masses" isn't difficult. Just cram in every possible feature you can think of and most people will love it. Some people, however, will hate it and look for alternatives. The problem with developing for that other group of people is having to make decisions on whether to implement a feature or not. What is a "must-have" and what is not?
Some features that I have so far chosen not to implement are: private messaging, file attachments, polls, linking to off-site avatars, advanced text formatting controls, subforums etc etc. The jury is still out on some of these features, but don't expect them to pop up anytime soon. It should however be noted that most, if not all of these features have been realised in the form of third-party mods.

Looks good 0 errors 0 warnings and mods are also available. So why not punBB instead of phpBB ? The only problem is in my opinion that private messaging isn´t implented. I would not run a board without this feature.
Like susan said no PM along with no file attachments, polls and subforums
I know you guys FROWN on attachments but a secure way to use jpeg and pdfs is a must have from sites like mine.
Polls are good from time to time
I might also add that just as soon as we started to use pun it would get hammered by the hackers. My bet is the reason it is secure now....is not many people use it. Kind of like Macs....back in the day there were no hackers working on Macs....but now a days yous ee more and more of it.

just my 2 cents...
When it comes to forums beyond phpbb2, I think reduce, secure, comply and develop is a great idea. For example, that duplicate profile issue has been a headache for user and sysop since Tom ported the forums into nuke 6.0.
However, I agree with Susann and Dawg. Without all the well loved phpBB2 features my users would revolt.

This is really kind of humorous to me. I was never suggesting a replacement for what we have . I had an inquiry about the forum application and I had never heard of it but after I looked at it I thought it looked like a nice light weight forum. From a personal standpoint I don't see PMs as a requirement for a forum. That's more my designer profile coming out. I'm not always into bigger is better and one application has to do it all. I'd rather provide a base and then have plugins. I haven't looked at it close enough to know if it is designed like that but from my personal perspective a forum is a forum is a forum etc. The bells and whistles should be addins. Part of my Nirvana for PHP-Portal(tm) is/was to provide a base that used plugins, not necessarily the same as addons but kinda-sorta Diversity - that's what makes us unique!

Well its an alternative like SMF to phpBB in the past.Instead of the private messages feature a chat would also do the trick or maybe a shoutbox I think.
Important for me using alternatives is just further development, a multilingal feature which means I don´t need to translate all the files in my language and a multilingual support forum is somewhere standard. Mambo, Joomla, Wordpress, SMF, Cpgnuke,NukeEvo,phpBB and of course NukeSentinel with a German Support forum have this.
