for some reason I can't backup my database using the nuke menu. It starts working and the download starts but after a second it quits and I have an empty sql file.
Right now my host control panel is down so I cant use phpmyadmin.
I started having similar trouble backing up via nuke once the database had reached about 5-10mb. I just export via phpmyadmin now instead. Nuke trips off the max execution time it would seem.

It is not nuke. You have timeout settings in both MySQL and PHP. Depending on your host, server, network congestion, etc., these are the things that cause the failure. I have close to 30 meg that I backup, still using nuke, w/o any problem. Using phpMyAdmin directly will afford you a little more time, but eventually it too will start timing out for the same reasons mentioned above.
