I would like the to add the ability to give NSN group priveleges to individual content categories or pages. Can anyone offer me a clue to get started? or does anyone know of a good alternative?

I figure that it must consist of some chunks of SQL to check for NSN group ID Numbers, but I dont know where to start....

Any help would be appreciated.

An interesting idea, for sure. Take a look at how the NSN groups modules (NSN-News, NSN-Group Downloads) uses a special function to determine if a user is a member of a group. You could do the same...
