Also, how do I get that silly error_log file to stop being created and populated?? I have display errors OFF in config and rnconfig errors set to default.
Usually with loglevel = 0 in rnconfig.php ...

I can confirm this bug:
If you deactivate "Allow online status to be shown" default field, then every user that registers is registered with a default of HIDDEN.

I suggested setting it zero, not deactivating it. What happens when you set it to zero (in the table itself)?

The `users` table is set to default to 1. I don't know why but I would not agree with that. Here is a portion of the schema:
