Excuse me if I'm being an idiot here, but how do I use the htaccess file? What do I need to add or modify to use it? I understand the chmod, and the path, but is that all that I need to do to use it? |

You do NOT need it at all unless you are using the CGIAuth protection. And, you do not need CGIAuth protection unless HTTPAuth protection is not available. |

Additional question from a newbe. My server does not support .htaccess. I even need to delete al the .htaccess files in order to make nuke to work. Than I think o help does this mean I can't use sentinel. Than I read the answer above and you should think everything is ok, but on another page I read:
Nukesentinel is basically there to protect your site from hackers, by blocking them and adding the IP to the deny list in the .htaccess file. Other features include IP tracking, enable/disable site etc.
So now I am a bit confused and realy don't get it anymore. So can you clear this out ? |

As Raven Said you do not need .htaccess to be protected by Sentinel. You do not have to write any blocked IP address to .htaccess it just addes a layer of protection and makes the web server kick them out before then even get into Nuke again, but if they are blocked they will be blocked as Sentinel keeps the IP addresss in a database.
.htaccess is but one tool that can be used in security. |

looking over the message I thought I would jump back in and just make a few simple points that may help new users.
1. .htaccess is used by the Apache web server software so if you have any other web server you don't have or can't use .htaccess
2. .htaccess is a simple text file that can be created and edited by any good text editor
3. .htaccess is used by Apache for a whole lot of things, way more then anyone can go into in a quick message. It has two functions that can be used by NukeSentinel; to password protect a file and/or a directory(admin.php), and to block IP address and ranges of IP address.
4. NukeSentinel does not need .htaccess to perform its primary functions, it will block attacks even if you do not have/use .htaccess
5. .htaccess is just a tool to add protection, even if you don't have access to it many of the same security functions are often available through your web hosting service
p.s. Thanks Raven |
