Where to put files for download

What directory are you supposed to use (or what directories, or what are the options) for putting files to be downloaded?

I've tried several ways and when you click to download the file it keeps looking for the index.php file in the directory I've told it the downloaded file is instead of the downloaded file itself. Hard to believe that Nuke would want me to put the file in /modules/Downloads/ ???

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this but when I went into the admin screen then modules admin for downloads and edited the download and clicked on check download, Sentinel got me. It could be because I'm a noobie and putting the file in the wrong place, I sure don't see any instruction.

The original downloads module was meant (as far as I can tell) to only link to downloads on other sites. However, you can host the files yourself. I am doing this. I even wrote a little upload module and linked that into the downloads module. I've just got the files laying under my html directory in a downloads directory.
