Inferno Like Application For Local Host Testing

I'm trying to find an application like Techgfx's Inferno to do some local testing on my WinXP SP2 laptop. Inferno was a breeze to setup. However, I'm trying to avoid MySQL/PHP 5. My main site runs Raven's latest release on PHP/MySQL 4 and for testing I'd like to use a backup of my main site.

So, if anyone knows of a one click (or as few as possible Razz

) to install apache/mysql/php & phpmyadmin, etc. Please let me know. Or any other alternatives.

Last time I checked, XAMP had everything all in one bundle.
It was extremely easy to use and seemd to be fairly lightweight application.
It did have php4 and php5 both, but you could switch between the two fairly easily,

I used it quite a bit till I finally just dumped windows completely and switched to linux.

Thanks wolfear, doing some googling (stuck on 12 hrs nightshift) I came across both XAMP & easyPHP. I'll have a rummage when I get home this morning. Very Happy

I used easyPHP for a while ,but found I had a much easier time of it using XAMP. easyPHP just seemd way slow on my machine.
Plus I don't read French very well, which is what easyPHP is written in.

XAMPP for me. It rocks. I downgraded it to PHP4 to match my host (they provide a batch file that does this).

XAMPP has MySQL 5 though, and that revealed one waiting bug in PHP-Nuke. The word "READS" is now a reserved word in MySQL 5. That broke the topics module. It was easy to fix though.

Downloaded an older version of XAMPP this morning with MySQL4, changed to PHP4 using the batch file. All looking good, will install Raven Nuke tomorrow all being well.

The newer versions of XAMP will actually let you switch bewtween 5.X and 4.4.4 and even a dummy like me can use it Wink

lol, where does that leave me then.

Only reason I went with an older install, it matches a few site installs (MySQL and close to PHP4 versions)I try to look after, but still gives me the option of PHP5 to mess about with. Also, the chance to test updates off of my prodution site. Hate breaking a live site too much Razz

Seeing as you're online at this horrible hour (0350 here in the UK), is it best to install nuke into the htdocs folder directly, or into a sub folder within htdocs when using XAMPP ?

It's being used mainly to test updates & I'm trying to get my head around creating/editing themes.

It's now 5.12 in the UK lol
Use a subfolder - at least thats what I have done with mine so I do not accidentally over write anything.
Assuming you created a folder called XAMP in the root of your hard drive, the path should be;
XAMP/xampp/htdocs/xampp/nuke/

Note the root public directory is actually XAMP/xampp/htdocs/xampp/
but as xampp has scripts in that last directory you want to add one more

Thanks Guardian2003, I'll try that. Anything to beware of when editing the config.php file? Database path etc.

Yes you'll need to browse xampp with your browser first to set a username and password for mySQL.
