advertising hack

hi there,

im trying to find or perhaps make an advertising block which will be more effective then the current one - which i feel is quite generic and doesn't reflect a vistors movement throughout the site.

this would involve a different banner being shown based on the topic/news a vistor is currently viewing. My site has over 30 different topics and would like to have different banner ads apear based on the topics being read. That way i could advertise specific products/services that relate to the topic in question.

another option (which would be a little easier i feel) would be to make it display different banners based on whichever module is currently loaded.

has this been done? can anybody help or offer some suggestions?
