All the files uploaded by the FCK editor are 777, should I change them to 644? Do I need to take any additional steps to protect the FCK directories that are 777? Thanks in advance.

If your host won't allow remote updates (it shouldn't) and you only allow admins to have access to this upload function (that is the case, by default), you should be OK, I think.
