Returning your username in forums

I'm working on a forum enhancement but need to return the username of the logged in user for tracking purposes e.g. if an admin changes a setting, I need to find out which admin it was by returning their username to a $var which I can then post to the DB as part of the audit trail.

What is the easiest way then to return the logged in users username?

I think from the cookie, but this is not my strong suit I am afraid...

In the forums, the username is stored in $userdata['username']
