Sitemap Modules slide menu

was wondering if anyone could mention to the owner of http://nukeseo.com an idea. I forget whos site it is the name prob doesnt need to be mentioned either. I dont have the need to sign up on the site yet so i thought id post here, also for others opinions.

I found a slide menu mod for phpbb admin last night, kinda cool but eh nothing really id use for the effort. Especially if i had to go look for the pages i wanted not knowing its category.

Then was browsing nukeseo's site and his sitemap module. The list of links were long. Was wondering if possible, or how easy a mod would be to do a slide menu for the module? I have not downloaded the sitemap module yet, may do that here soon.

Also was wondering, not knowing how it works, is if it would be possible also to allow subcategories for the forums and other links. Ill have to explore it a bit more. Just was thinking of other ways to orginize.

not really sure how to or what exactly, well can explain what im looking for i guess. What would i google to learn how to create such slide menus?

Hi jjh221. I've actually thought about that, for the very reason you mentioned. I was thinking of an expand / contract menu, though, rather than a slide menu. It might make a nice enhancement for the next release Wink

I hadn't thought about subcategories for the forum, but the same sublevel concept could apply to links and download categories, news stories, etc. Of course, that would change the order that information is displayed, but not necessarily a problem.

Actually, when I looked at the demo you referenced, that's along the lines of what I was thinking. The only difference is that I'd want a way to expand and contract everything, in addition to working with specific categories.

all being able to collaps and expand (c/e)
would make it pretty sexy :p

I haven't looked at what you are referring to, but thought that I would throw my 2 cents in (if its even worth that much).

This sitemap servers TWO purposes IMO:

1) For search engines other than Google (because you can submit their sitemap directly to them), it helps then to crawl your site. Therefore, it is very important that the links that are presented are SE "friendly" (i.e., easily crawled from a strictly textual context - NO javascript).

2) For individual "consumers" to get a feel for the categories of content and links to them. Humans think well in terms of a hierarchical categorical type structure. Search Engines couldn't really care less.

As long as the two "use models" do not conflict and you can satisfy both, that is a true winning sitemap!

With nukeWYSIWYG, we don't display the editor to crawlers since it wastes bandwidth and slows down the crawler. We could do the same thing with the Sitemap, but I think it might be easier just to initially display it expanded. That addresses both issues.

I still have not downloaded or installed yet, but... To me there are two different sitemaps. 1. for user navigation 2. for crawler navigation.

For the users navigation I feel that it would be much nicer to have it look like this.
For the crawlers navigation, right the crawler doesnt care, but then again the crawler uses an .xml or .txt file.

I use http://gsitecrawler.com/ for my sitemaps, that i submit to google or yahoo. Very nice tool imo.

If the module does what this tool does then i guess i can understand the reason for leaving it expanded. Although if it doesnt create a file to submit to crawlers and is for user navigation, then having it look pretty to me is more important. I know when i get on large, congested/bloated sites that i look for a sitemap to help me find exactly what i need.

I can understand having the (c/e) for the forums section is kinda retarded, because it would look just like th forums kinda, but like kg said for downloads or other links it may be usefull.

right i agree also. that if the sitemap can look nice to users and include everything for a sitemap.xml file or urlist.txt file then it truely is a winning sitemap. If this is what you mean.

I think we're all on the same page. nukeSEO's sitemap is really 2 sitemaps - an HTML sitemap for users and crawlers and an XML sitemap for Google (and others). The difference between this and other sitemaps is that it's dynamic. You don't need to generate and submit it. It's generated from whatever content is on your site when the crawler reads it, so Google and other search engines always see the latest content.

I am looking into an expanding menu for the HTML sitemap and, by default, it will display fully expanded.
