did I upgrade right?

I was told all I had to do was drag and drop the contents of the html folder for 7.1 using ftp and everything would go to the right place. I am wondering if that is correct. I am starting to see a lot of problems and can't help but wonder if maybe ftp did not update a lot of the files since I have done a lot of mods to my site.

I am having a ton of avatar problems now and when you go into 'your account' you can't open the 'your info' page at all.

To upgrade ANY version of nuke (or any package as a general method)

1. Run all database SQL updates as instructed.
2. Update all files, usually through an FTP client.

Not all FTP clients work the same nor do they always have certain needed options set as their default. I would try reupdating the files, via FTP, using the transfer method as opposed to drag-n-drop. And, if you were using a customized version, you normally need to upgrade in a different way, depending on the extent of the customization. In other words, you may need to reapply those customizations after you do your ftp depending on what core files may have been customized and/or what tables may have been customized.

Just follow the instructions in the Readme.
Run the update.sql if you are upgrading and upload the files.
As Raven pointed out wisely in his post, if you have any customisation in place, you will need to re add those after unless you have a file comare utility to make the changes before you upload.
Always do a back-up of your files and database before any changes or upgrades, that way you have a fail safe if things go pear shaped.

Your mention about a file compare utility makes me wonder if I mod files the best way.

I only have two modifications to my forums.

1. attachment mod
2. custom title mod

What would a file compare utility do for me?

I use textpad as recommended by Raven and it will compare files to find differences. How do I use that to make modification to files for mods easier?

I'm not familiar with textpad but it probably works in a similar fashion to the utility I use, an app called CompareIt
You can load the old and new files which it then displays to you in two windows side by side highlighting any diffferences.
With a single click of the mouse you can then copy across from old to new, new to old or it has an auto option.
Differences are shown on a line by line basis.
Give it a try and see how it compares to the utility you are using.

I use both and CompareIt is a much more poweful utility. Textpad is a programmers text editor and has a compare function but that's it. No updates, etc.

Thanks for the feedback Raven.
There are probably dozens of other similar tilities out there but, being a predominantly lazy male of the species, if I find something that works and suites my needs, I tend to stick to it rather than try oher products.

Upgrading is one of the few things that really makes me nervous lol I have a lot of modified core files and I don't even remember what is where, so I think I'd better get CompareIt. I do use Textpad but it doesn't do anything but show different parts.

I have dropped my use of the utility CompareIt in favour of BeyondCompare 2 - this utility allows me to select 2 root folders from which the comparison will run and includes all sub-folders and all files in all folders - this I found extremely useful when upgrading from 7.4 to 7.5 as I could actually see which files had been removed from the distro.
Although it is not free, it has a 30 day trial and for some reason it has been working for about 3 months now and still says I have 14 days left LOL

Cool but I think I'll stay with Compare It for now, I don't have access to a crack code to negate the time period on BeyondCompare.
