Google has been hosting open source projects for a while now. I like sourceforge, but it is often slow and seems kind of clunky. Google's facilities seem very simple and sleek. You get SVN, a wiki, issue tracker, message board, etc.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of this.

For now...Gmail originally had, what, 1 GB of space?

BTW, my Cuban wife is not a fan of Che - nor am I.

This statement just makes me laugh:

Quote:
Why is Google offering to host open source projects?

One of our goals is to encourage healthy, productive open source communities. Developers can always benefit from more choices in project hosting.

Sorry, but I've been down on Google for a long time now. They are the new Microsoft IMO (and, yes, I am entitled to MY opinion Laughing ) That want to profit from being able to provide better code search results... plain and simple. They are in business to monetize everything that they possibly can.

They won't get my business.

Wow! If they can provide a slick place to host code and make money at it then more power to them. I use google mail, google documents, google maps... I love it.

What's wrong with making money? Google at least has a "do no evil" philosophy unlike Microsoft, who tries to make money NO MATTER WHAT.

Well, everyone has there opinion, but when you have shareholders and you get as big as Google has gotten, you have to "produce". The days of "do no evil" philosophy are gone.

I am not trying to persuade folks against them. Just stating my opinion. I'm done.

Nah, it's no problem, I was just curious since I had never heard anyone say anything like that about them before. Smile

Lets just say that they screwed me on Google Adsense and refused to listen. Pretty much have NO recourse and they did not care. Then, I was using Blogger and the FTP option to my own domain. Once Google bought them, they cut out the ability to have your own custom template UNLESS you solely used their URL.

They then did the same thing to my sister and her blog as well as have a bug in their ATOM feed AND in their archives and its still not fixed. So, I decided a few weeks back to migrate over my sister's blog to my own server using b2evolution. I have the data pulling now from Blogger using Goggle Data API's and am now working on the API for b2evolution. I expect a complete migration when I am done and then I am truly done with them. I don't care how COOL their stuff is and how much they give away from free. I'm not going to be a partaker.

Once you realize how much data Google actually has on you, its a little disturbing. I have a feeling that Google is the next Microsoft Smile
