Sounds like something you need a cream for
Quote: | Hello;
I'm writting to you because you were or you are user of PHP-Nuke and for me is important to inform the community that PHP-Nuke has been sold on past October 2007. I need to inform you about this because the new owner failed to meet the agreement we had to inform the public at a certain date and this is starting to negatively affect me.
After I sold the project I wanted to start another activity but soon I realized that programming is my life. Few days ago I opened another web site and started a new Content Management System or Portal System that is initialy based on the latest version of PHP-Nuke.
The new project name is Smeego and you can find its official website at http://smeego.com
I want to give to Smeego another focus. The first version is already available for download and I fixed lot of stuff, did some code cleanup and changed all the default themes including some that are very nice.
Smeego open a new market if you are a developer. You can code modules, themes and blocks for it and offer them to the users community.
The system and the website itself are more open that PHP-Nuke. For example, the commercial license is gone, the sell of the latest version is gone as well and the software is totaly free of any charge. The site isn't overloaded with ads, comments are open for registered users... etc...
Being the first version I have lot of interest that people start using it, suggesting ideas and features, send fixes if they find bugs on the code, etc...
Smeego will focus on the intelligence of the system and the graphic design. Smeego is released under the terms of the GNU/GPL license as well.
I want to cordialy invite you to check the official site at http://smeego.com and leave your opinion and if you like what you see I'll be more than happy if you use this new code on your commercial or non-commercial website. Many cool stuff will come in the future for Smeego!
Check it out and enjoy it.
Thanks for your time,
Francisco Burzi

Hmm, looks exactly like phpNuke!
Surely if it is based off phpNuke, he should retain the copyright for phpNuke?
I noticed Avantgo is renamed to Mobile and it is using Autotheme.
I hope people don't get sucked in by this. Oops spoke to soon, read the comments. |

What I never understood, I read so much negative things about Mr Burzi and his PHP-Nuke creations but why did so much 'spin-offs', like RavenNuke you name it, take php-nuke as a basis to start off?
Wouldn't it be easier, less frustrating and probably faster to start from scratch?
Or were most distro's started/created to show that they could do better and needed to proof some point?
Of course this 'friendly competition' led to some great products and communities but just never understood why they took php-nuke if they hated it so much? |

That's very easy to explain warren:
1. Creating a complete new system costs time (hack i'm working on one for 3 years already)
2. GPL allows you to use/share other GPL code if people do stupid things
3. Most people liked the behavior and features but disliked the insecurity and lack of Versioning Control, bugfixes, etc.
If you like a system but dislike the code, you just refactor it |

We knew phpNuke was dead, but I don't think anything has changed with FB. |

another point... if you go back, let's say, 4 or 5 years later and look for a content management system, what could you find... PHP-Nuke and Mambo. PHP-Nuke was the most popular one on those times so you download, install it and make it work. The time goes by and you get used to it, you like the all the functionality but d*** it, security is pure crap. So why do we not create a new system from scratch?.... because it will take ages to get to a mature codebase. The you you think, if the creators are not interested at all in making the system more secure, Why do we not create a fork/distro keepeing the original functionality but focusing more on security? And that's why we are all here at. |

Well, I see that he stole our code in mainfile.php for is_admin and is_user at least in incorporating the static variable (the way he had tried to do this originally in one of these functions was completely wrong and didn't work, so Gremmie fixed it). Of course, he still could have done better taking the whole thing for each as there were other slight improvements made and he missed taking the formatTimestamp() improvements also related to using a static variable to improve performance.
Gee, I wonder what else he has "stolen" and bastardized... same old... same old. |

Maybe the security issues help the PR (sad, but possibly true) |

The problem i see is its the same old "it will do" attitude, unfortunately a lot of this stems back to windows users and there "click click, she'll be right" attitude.I used to be one of the biggest clickers , but RN seem to do things the right way or if they cant do it the right way they do it the right way .
Simple things like xhtml compliancy is very low on most people's agender as it does not effect the overall site's look and feel but everytime these "behind the scenes errors" are produced it loads the server more and more (even as little a load as it might be). xhtml compliancy also provides better cross browser compatibillity. These simple things that dont make the site look better take enormous amounts of time as that is part of my job (web standards and compliancy), and i know from experience that the raven team would have spent countless hours (swearing ). Also lets not forget this is only one feature of the whole package.
So in summary only joking
php-nuke is a great package and although most people seem to say its dead i think its wishfull thinking, what they dont mention is it is still to this day the most used CMS in existence. basically if i built a car and someone found major problems with it and also provided the fix i would say thankyou & "Want A Job", but instead known vulnerabillities are left unpatched for no other reason then pride as far as i can see.
so thanks Francisco Burzi for starting a great CMS and thanks Raven Nuke for finishing it |

Do you know who designed the order of the foot pedals in a car?
Right, you don't. A lot of people do understand it and know Austin copy-cat it to it's cars in Europe.
Same deal with CMS/Portal websites. Someone invented it and others copy-cat it. But do people still know what ThatWare is? |

I too was wondering how much of Nuke FB wrote. He clearly didn't write many of the standard modules, there are other names in the files. |

And not to mention the copyrights that were removed. A lot of code is contributed by other people and not noted. |

And thank god for that, thats what creates competition in this world and without competition you would still be using thatware on a pc you couldn't afford |

thats one thing i dont agree with, copyrights should always be left in place. But it is so frequently removed it is hard to know who did what these days lol |
