I think he's a large task to compete with himself and all the others in the commercial market.

But he has had some loyal followers that no doubt would jump at the chance. If you look at many of the old articles where phpbb2 was first added many complaints were lodged by folks who didn't want or need the forum and were frustrated it was so embedded removing it was a huge task.

In many ways suprisingly even to me I'd like to see him go in the commercial direction.

You bring up a good point with the lang files and the sheer size of the portal. A lite version would be refreshing thats for sure. (Open Site Manager is leading the way there by not cramming every feature into the distribution archive).

I think inspite of popular opinion that .com is dead there is room for someone who has as large a following as FB to make some money from a commercial CMS. Improvements would have to be made in areas of design and layout control, speed and more intranet friendly installation. (Hmn sounds like the direction PostNuke is moving).

I think the rivalry there will keep FB moving along the same lines. Until recently there wasn't much one had the other didn't. But now with Xanthia PostNuke has one upped PHPNuke IMHO. Which isn't even into the current distribution yet. Now I think we'll see FB attempt simular but most likely in a commercial version. (Pure speculation but... we'll see.)

PostNuke is a klunky mess now in a way because of all the mix of old and new. If FB was to make a clean start he'd be one step ahead just because he wouldn't have to deal with all the redundant code. Thats what I think is coming anyway. PHPNuke as it is now will most likely be as it is for a long time aside from some backwards porting of new features along the way.

Side note* Xanthia is OpenSource maybe he'll just clone it Razz If he doesn't you can almost bet someone else out there will port it to phpnuke.

<--- want's nuke portal too.

I'd like to see something sleek and secure, admin/user friendly, include the perfect YA Module/Core. Then, let third party developers have a go at the addons.

If you build it, they will come.

No matter what design(s) I am trying, it seems to point to the fact that it will have to be a gut-and-build process. There is too much wrong or unstructured to retro-fit. I have to quit sleeping - it's just too unproductive! I'm considering starting over and releasing it in parts, to test, as I build. Maybe the Jackal can check with the Resistance?

I have ample space on my site to test.
