how to create module similar to messages module

here is what I am looking to do... if anyone could help please..

I know how to create a module that has the header and footer so I can put in my own information, but i am unable to edit it from the site when I login to the admin...

for example. when I login to the admin sectiion and go to the homepage, I am able to edit the homepage "Message" with either wysiwyg or the html code..

I would like to make custom modules where I will be able to edit the content in there as if it was similar to the homepage messages.

does anyone know how to do this?
