I was just goofing around with some of the supported CSS 3 changes with Firefox. Themes are going to be so easy to customize when it is fully supported by browsers. A preview can be found here Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!. Rounded corners, multi column layouts, box shadow, many other neat things that will be done with simple css instead of many divs and images. Cool stuff.... |

CSS 3 could be a good reason to put the fork in ie6 and not support it anymore. A lot of designers have totally abandoned ie6 support. |

definitely some cool features there....
hopefully css 3.0 will kill ie6, if not, html 5 looks like a likely coffin nail (whenever that happens) |

As of this week, I will actually be redirecting IE6 users to a holding page with links to where they can download a more modern browser. |

My bet would be only businesses are still stuck back on IE6 because their legacy web applications (probably no longer supported and still waiting on their SAP implementations to replace!)... |

My redirect is in place, I'm actually looping them round to encourage them to upgrade or use a different browser. I'm not going to pander to Windyblows any longer and to be honest, it gets a little tiring to keep having to employ CSS hacks etc for older browser (just my personal view). |

I feel the same about the css hacks, and about small monitor displays too

I use a little javascript for IE6 called pushup.js that gives them a popup telling them their browser is an antique and needs to be upgraded with links to IE8 .. I do like the redirect idea though. Maybe redirect them to one of those endless loop warning boxes that lists all the issues with Internet Explorer.... |

haha, ya, nothing like working for hours to get a script or layout the way you want, only to try in IE and want to cry... how about this for all ie users, maybe it will get point across
<!--[if IE]>
<style type="text/css">
body {color:yellow;text-decoration:blink;background:pink;}
</style>
<![endif]-->
the last ie css hack you'll ever need, lol |

Yes that is indeed the issue right now.
My dad's compagny isn't planning to switch to any new version of IE because 90% of their applications relies on ie6.
The compagny has over 600,000 employees and another 300,000 offshore on oil platforms.
1) they can't update them all at once. and if they don't update all at once the compagny will lose the ability to connect to each employee implying a vast chaos.
2) ever tried to explain how email work? People are often convinced that they can't work on a new software because they are used to the old.
The other reason is about security, they cannot afford any security leaks. From what I know and suspect is that the tech guys have patched the SAP so many times the actual core of the OS is unrecognizeable.A bit like ravennuke.however normal programs can run on sessions if you patch them too.
What I also suspect is that their main mail program is using IE inframed.
In other words, businesses won't change to IE7/8 firefox /safari |

Just because they have to use IE6 does not mean they can not also have a second browser like Firefox. When it gets to the point that only MSN is viewable under IE6, they will us other browsers. I am also sure that IT departments that rely on IE6 are probably not the most security minded people.... |

nuken, actually it does, my work will not install any other browser and I am stuck using IE6 at work. I also disagree with your comment regarding security, Microsoft are still supporting IE6 and releasing updates/patches.
If Microsoft were to drop support then companies would be forced to make the change, but I don't see that happening any time soon. |

I understand that they won't install anything other than ie6, but they can. If websites stop being concerned about IE6 support, IT departments can and will add other browsers even if they rely on IE6 or Windows 2000 for certain apps. My point was they do have options without costly major system upgrades. Many sites (Facebook, Youtube, Amazon, Digg, Trickedoutnews ) are rumored to be cutting support of IE6 by years end. If that happens, many others will follow suit.... |

Yes they certainly could, but I can guarantee they won't. They do not want to have to support 2 browsers, which for a multinational company like I work for amounts to a considerable amount of work. Facebook, Youtube etc. are already blocked by my work so I don't think dropping support for IE6 will make them take notice.
At the moment I can access Trickedoutnews, but of course if you drop support for IE6 I will then have problems accessing your site for support. |

I was joking about my site. It doesn't function too well in IE6 anyway... |

Just for a reality check to everyone reading this, RN, at this time, has no intention of out and out dropping IE support for IE6. However, there will be some things, in the future (like CSS3) that may cause IE6 breakage that will cause us to make a final determination. Hopefully, by then, most of the MS users (corporate and non) will either have switched to FF or upgrade / |
