I´m quite sure the new version of FileZilla contains still a strange behavior if you edit files on the server.
I used several years the same version cause I couldn´t use an other with WinMe but I had never any issues with the edit function. It started with the first version I used with XP and I have this issue still in version 3.0.11.1. Just a strange behavior of this great tool. Its a great pitty.Rolling Eyes

What sort of strange behaviour?

Maybe you will not notice a difference if you never used an other version but the edit function of files is a bit strange. Sometimes it asks to uload the file from the cache and sometimes not. Can´t explain this exactly but many guys have problem with this behavior of FileZilla.

I use version 2.x after finding a number of bugs in later versions. I had real problems with failed uploads not re-scheduling in ealry 3.x versions but that may have been fixed now.

Haven't tried editing files on a server, but I haven't any other problems with 3.0.10. It's now my FTP of choice, especially since it now has recursive permissions. Nice!

Yeah, I am still using 2.x myself and I have never had an issues with the View/Edit feature. If you make a change to the file you are looking at, save it and then close it, FileZilla should ask you if you want to re-upload the saved version back. At least that is what is so nice and clean with 2.x.

I just cannot afford to have issues with my FTP client, so after having the same bad experience as Guardian, I went back and have not had the stomach yet to try 3.x again. But, I may need to start heading in that direction again... I am interested in these edit issues...

I am using 3.0.11.1 and when I edit files that are on my server, after I save them it asks if I would like to upload the new document. There is also a checkbox for deleting the local file. I use that so I do not get confused as to which one I am editing. My editor of choice is ConText

Why screw around with files on FTP?
Haven't you learned to test before going in production?

With that respect i never used edit capabilities in any FTP program!

Oh I have learned a lot particularly with regard to the behavior of my PC. Smile

There is a support forum for FileZilla available and also a more or less informative Wiki. Whenever you found something strange post it there I´m an active reader.

I have used Cuteftp and Smartftp and both of them are confusing, if not buggy about editing files on the server. I'm with djmaze, use an editor for editing and a ftp client for ftp'ng. If you HAVE to edit files directly on the server use something like Cpanel for a quick and dirty edit. At least you know what you are looking at, not some copy of a file that is loaded into a PC's memory and then re-ftp'd back up when you say you are done with it.
