htaccess query

Since updating Sentinel when I go to Sentinel Config panel where the path to htaccess is entered ie; .htaccess

directly under that is printed this error message:

Normally: /home/minicity/public_html/nuke/html/.htaccess
File does not exist or is not correctly CHMODed.

When I go to my file manager in the site's cpanel and look in the html folder there is no .htaccess file. There never has been one in there, I don think, only in the abuse folder, and that's chmoded 666.

Should there be an htaccess file in the html folder and if so why isnt it in the nuke or sentinel folder to upload? Is this new to the latest sentinel version?

This has puzzled me today. Is the htaccess file in the sentinel download folder just for cgi or can we use that one in the html folder on apache servers?

Depending on which ftp client you use, they hid all files that begin with . There will be a place where you can enter what's called a File Mask and you need to enter '-la' (w/o the quotes). Now that resolves the hidden .htaccess. Try chmodding it to 777. Then again, maybe your host does not allow you to have an .htaccess file.

If you are using CPanel's File Manager to view files in the www root, and you don't see the .htaccess, then it's definitely not there. CPanel's File Manager, by default, shows hidden files. If you're using an FTP client, then like Gaylen said, you need to use a filter command (I just use -a) to show ALL (including hidden/system) files.

That out of the way... by default, there typically isn't an .htaccess placed in your root. It would only be there if the host had enabled Frontpage Extensions on your domain. If you have one in your abuse folder, then chances are we aren't going to have an issue with your host not allowing them. Anyways, you can use the CPanel File Manager to create a new text file in the www folder. Name it .htaccess Wink

Open it and make sure there are 2 lines in it (both blank). So if you open it and your cursor is on Line 1 with no where else to go, hit ENTER once, then save it. You should be good to go...

Thanks guys.

I dont have front page extensions enabled, its just a plain Apache Linux hosting. I am allowed .htaccess, cos I have a few in different folders on there for different applications. I use WS_ftp as my ftp program by the way

Right so I'll make up the new text file as you (PHrEEk) suggest and see if that cracks it.
