Everytime I install & chmod my .htaccess file I get: "Internal Server Error" and my site is gone. If I put in a blank .htaccess file I can get back into the site but with no Sentinel protection - as far as I can tell.

PHPNUKE version: 7.6 Platinum
Sentinel version: NukeSentinel_760_220pl
Server: Apache/Unix
MySQL: 3.23.58

I've tried a bunch of configurations of the .htaccess and read & tried the fixes suggested but all, but the blank one, give me the error. Could it be server config that has a problem? I don't have my own server. I cannot see the .htaccess file in my FTP server to download it, I can only upload it as "sample.htaccess", chmod it & rename it.

I need this to work because I got hacked a while back by an email spammer.

Depending on the ftp client you are using you have to pass a parameter to your host when ftp connects. The parameter is '-a' w/o quotes. It's referred to as a remote file mask. That setting allows you to see hidden files, like .htaccess.

A 500 server error often times indicates a syntax error in the .htaccess file. Other times it can mean that your host does not allow those directives.. You do not need .htaccess to use NukeSentinel as long as PHP is compiled as an Apache module. You just won't be able to block IP's at the server level but NukeSentinel will still be able to block them from MySQL. If you see HTTP Authorization as an option in your NukeSentinel configuration, then you will be able to use it w/o .htaccess. You might still be able to write the banned IP's to .htaccess though. It could be that the other directives are what's causing you the server error.
