Um, we are going in circles here and repeating ourselves. Susan the bottom line is this:

You can improve your visibility beyond just your index by "tapping" your site. How much this improves your visibility is obviously open to speculation as well as opinion.

SEF does make a difference if you use it wisely.
It doesn't matter for crawling, but it does matter for indexing and structuring.

For example:

http://dragonflycms.com/Forums/
vs
http://dragonflycms.com/index.php?name=Forums
vs
http://dragonflycms.com/Forums.html

A SE categorizes depening on structure as well.
