Better articles index

I want to have dozens of stories/articles...... is there a better way of indexing them.....rather than having to search by date..... sort of like the FAQ where you search by topic ....... or am I missing something really simple here.....I wish to have some sotries appear on home page and be available to everyone....and other stories only available to reg users..... what I was planning to do is have the original mod visible to all and thne duplicate that mod and rename it something like stories2 and load reg user stories via that and not have that mod visable to everyone or again.......is there an easier way to have some stories only avail to reg users......
