After getting a quote from Raven, via his feedback module. Our clan has decided that we WILL move over.
Our disk space has altered quite a lot, for the better. But i think Ravens emails cover that, as we discussed.
However, as ive never actually transferred a full, running site. I need to know what to do next, and i have a few questions
1/will we suffer downtime, while we transfer? if so roughly how long could this be? (Do i need to warn ppl )
2/ our current webmail, will this be transferred too. Will ppl lose the contents of their inboxes?
3/Is it as simple as taking a full backup..uploading to the new server and importing the database sqls/site files, from that backup?
As i said..go easy on me..never transferred b4
We are interested in moving ASAP as our current hosts, are losing their good service record rather quickly.
Cheers

Yes you may suffer downtime, esp as the domain change is propagated. It could take up to 3 days for everyone to get the updated site. Probably the webmail would not be transfered, unless you are both using a system like Cpanel and there is some kind of export/import functionality.
Pretty much the way is to load your files through FTP. Use phpMyAdmin to do a database backup and load that using phpMyAdmin (or for large database, the Big Dump script)
Hope that helps |

yeh we are currently using Cpanel too, and i regularly select the 'generate/download full backup' so that i can keep one locally, i assume that includes sql files for creating the exact dbs and content. |

I don't know if the CPanel back up includes the SQL. I'd do a database backup from the Nuke admin just to be safe.
You can re-upload your site while the DNS propogates. A tip would be to just upload the whole zip file from CPanel File Manager and then just unzip from there. It'll save time and headaches. |

What I have personally done (since we're talking a dynamic web site) is:
1. move all the static content and script files over to the new server
2. take a snap-shot of the DB and move that over
3. test the new setup on the new server. After everything looks "good":
4. turn "OFF" the old site using NukeSentinel
5. take one last DB dump, structure and data and make sure I use the "DROP TABLES IF EXIST" option
6. import the db dump into the new site
7. test the new site features while NukeSentinel is still shut off. After everything is in good shape...
8. turn on the site on the new server from NukeSentinel
9. on the old site, place a redirect to your new site's URL using the IP address (a temporary measure)
10. switch the DNS
The details of which I leave to you (or ask where you have concerns). |

I believe Raven uses cPanel so provided you give him your current cpanel user/pass the whole kit and kaboodle can be imported in one go. |

That would speed the process up no end i think, depending on what his workload is.
Also gives me someone to blame if it goes wrong

Update
Well we finally got around to putting some cash Ravens way.
The full Cpanel backup via ftp did the trick. I just about managed to get it sorted, but stumbled on the finer points of transferring mail accounts/sub-domains etc.
So after many emails back and forth, i gave Raven the Cpanel info and he did a fantastic job, quickly too.
I think both our inboxes have gone into meltdown now
The site seems to run quicker aswell.
As the topic title says..
Thanks Raven, nice one. |
