.htaccess wont upload

I am trying to install the raven nuke 7.6 and my host will not allow uploads of files that begin with a period. I am very new at this and have no clue what the .htaccess file does. I assume it is important as there are quite a few of these files throughout the folders. Is there any way to get around this? I have tried multiple different FTP programs to no avail. I am still uploading stuff so I have yet to find out if the page will run without these files or what. Can someone please help a total noob.

Have you tried uploading as my_htaccess then renaming it with your ftp client?

yeah tried renaiming to 1.htacces and then renaming them and it didnt work.

Copy it to your computer, delete it off the server, then move it back to the server from your computer.

I would change hosts then. I can think of no reason for a host not allowing the use of .htaccess files

You can use nuke sentinel without htaccess but without the function http auth without blocker function write to htacces etc. etc. and you can never use permanently redirect or mod rewrite. There are enough other hosts.

You can use http auth w/o .htaccess. .htaccess is only needed for cgi auth and writing IP's to block. They will still be blocked but just stored in a MySQL table.

One more "shot". Did you try to rename using your host's control panel or through the FTP client. If FTP client, try it through the file utilities of your account control panel. Worth a try.

I just had another brainwave too.........
I have presumed your host is using apache and not windoze?
Does your hosting account allow you to create sub-domains?
Normally when you create sub-domains via your hosting control panel, it will create a htaccess file automatically, so it will be interesting to see if it actually does that.

I appreciate all the help. I have found what the problem was. To make a long story short my host sucks. One they dont allow upload of quite a few files, one being files that begin with a period. Nor will they allow you to rename to them. Second somehow they downgraded my account even after they charged me for the higher kaching!

$ one. I have since dropped them and gone with a much better one (one I should have in the first place) and I am now in the nightmare world of trying to transfer my domain. Since they downgraded my account with the first host it dropped my 24/7 tech support so I am resorting to trying to get their attention through emails. Anyways thanks for all the help.
