Hello all, I have had a problem for some time with my front page losing page rank all other pages are ok. I have had a look at some old backups and notice a difference.
I find that in the head tag there used to be this line "code in red"
<html>
<head>
<BASE HREF="http://www.sea-fishing.org/">
but now for some reason I dont have it? not sure why but still how important is it to have this line in the head? could it make a difference to google?
One thing if I wanted to add the code back what file do I edit, I know the keywords and description is in the meta but where do I find the <html>
<head> tags????
thanks all

I dont recall seeing that ever.
You could try the root header or theme header, if you have old back up files a quick file compare should reveal all.
For the record, I doubt this is causing your lost page rank. Google in particular has been doing some strange things of late including changing page rank of the same unchanged page on a day to day basis.
Your time would be better sent ensuring you have good, fresh content. |

That just tells the browser where your site is loading from, where you want links to go, etc. Quite a handy trick. If people end up going to http://sea-fishing.org - the page links will still have http://www.sea-fishing.org/ - keeps things uniform
You can just add that code into includes/meta.php - it doesn't matter where in the head it is. |

Yes this is true I have found something interesting myself
basically I have my main site which is my sea fishing site and on a sub domain I have a gaming site and what happens is at different times through the day my sea fishing site gets it page rank back then I notice my gaming sub domain loses its rank and vise verser????
this must be some kind of glitch with google????
this has been happening at totally different times for weeks
Cheers

Google doesn't just update their page rank and change in willy-nilly as your describing. I'm not sure when was the last time that google danced but your page rank is only affected when they update, no time before nor after.
Are you 100% sure that the page your loading is the same everytime?
Many themes will direct you to the index.php page when you click on "Home" in the Modules area. index.php is almost always lower that http://www.yoursite.com
Also, some browsers now seem to be referring to some sites as http:yoursite.com. In many cases, there is low to no page rank for url's missing the www.
Quite honestly, I don't think it's your page that is receiving the page rank, its that particular domain.
When I navigate through your site, just clicking on some of your quick nav links can take me to:
- http://www.sea-fishing.org/
- http://www.sea-fishing.org/index.html
BTW, very nice looking site!
I've also noticed that your forums have a much higher page rank than your weblinks area and the main page combined. It may be a good idea to check your backlinks and just make sure that your reciprocal link partners are actually pointing to http://www.sea-fishing.org/ only no other url if possible.
Lastly, if you made any recent changes to your site you may have just not been indexed and updated. My sites have been seeing tremendous amounts of activity from google lately so their definately up to something.
Anyway, I'd ensure my backlinks are pointing to your actual domain name and wait till the next time google updates their Page Ranking, I'm sure you'll start seeing the PR return at that time. |

Sorry Duke, but it looks like we may have to disagree.
I have seen rankings update on static html site which have varied almost from day to day - so I cannot ignore the evidence of my own eyes.
I should add that I only began noticing this since the Jagger google dance.
Something is definitely amiss!
To add to 'the wierdness' I noticed last night that my 'this site is suspended' page of my hosting company has a google rank of 6/10.
This is a blank page save for the single message that is displayed, it contains no meta tags or other data and I have never suspended an account so it should not have even been crawled as it has never been displayed.
I will be checking my stats logs etc to confirm it has never been visited, as my robots.txt file is excluding it. |

As I said sometimes I will look on my front page of my sea fishing site to see the google rank appears and it stays for sometime which can be hours. When it has gone you can try anything but that rank has gone, I even get friends to check it out and they can see the rank leave and return etc.
Its definately something to do with the subdomain as when I lose the rank if I check my gaming site the rank has come back there and its the same for anyone who checks it, I will have a rank on only one site, never a rank on both at the same time Its a rank 5 on my main site or a rank 4 on my gaming site but never at the same time. thats must be google having problems surely???????
Thanks for your informative reply
Cheers

Well then they must have made changes to their algorithms because they never updated PR continually that I know of.
As for your PR, I don't see any way that it can fluctuate so wildly unless your making major changes to your site that haven't been spidered by google yet. That simply doesn't make any sense at all.
There has also been speculation that google may be replacing PR with some other in house conceived plan to shake up the www. Maybe what we're seeing is a hint of things to come. |

I have contacted them but unfortunately they emailed back and explained to read the frequently asked questions which I had already done so I give up as my first question took ages for a reply.
Cheers
