Is there a fairly simple way to make a script to automatically add a user to a usergroup upon account activation?

I want to keep my forums open/free for everyone, but we've been having some real issues with spammers lately. I can't seem to keep them away. I'm using captcha and everything, but it's not doing the trick (likely they are manually registering and then flooding the forums with spam posts with a bot later on).

I want to have a volunteer to help be able to stop a user from being able to post, but I don't want to have to go through the trouble of setting up admin accounts for people. I would rather just have all users added to a usergroup, and then when a spammer shows up, they can remove the user from the general access group and that user will no longer be able to post.

I could send someone a little money via PayPal for a solution to this.

http://www.phpnuke-guild.org/downloads/YA_default_user_group.zip

Drop the files within the "html" folder into your site. Then use phpmyadmin to execute default_user_group.sql. Once installation is complete go into "Your_Account Admin -> Configuration -> Registration" and set "Default User Group" to the desired group.

If you have any questions or problems post back. You should not have any problems, but please backup all affected files and your database before trying this.

If this works out please make a small donation to this site if you are able.

I am currious but wouldn't this solution also provide the spammer the ability to remove legitimate users access as well? I mean if all users of the default group can remove a group membership then when a spammer is signed up and added automatically to the group he has that same rights initially and I would be a littel concerned about that?

I believe only 1 user account (the user account set as group moderator) in addition to any administrator accounts would be able to remove someone from group membership. So this shouldn't create any new concerns.

I am totally lost I think, I apologize. The way you said it above is you don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a bunch of admins so you want to lump everyone under a default group so the can self moderate if a spammer shows up and remove his access? But if only 1 Moderator or admins can remove him then where in lies the savings of setting up those admins?

I think the best way to summarize is that we wants to make users moderators of a PhpBB group rather than giving them forum admin ability.
