Since the date for PHP4 End-of-Life (EOL) is fast approaching, I would like to take a poll to see how many of your web hosts out there are making the switch.
Feel free to explain or comment. The goal I have for this poll is to find out how many of you could run PHP5-only scripts now vs. when/if in the future.
DO NOT POST ANYTHING THAT REVEALS WHO YOUR WEB HOST IS. Your post will be removed, or worse, you might be banned for violating the rules of this site!!!
Thanks!

It has been a little over a year since I started using php5. The shared hosting plan I was using at the time had an option in the control panel to switch to using php5 so I went for it. I had no problems after making the switch. A few months ago I got an unmanaged VPS because the shared host just wasn't cutting it anymore and I wanted more control. I installed PHP5 right away and everything worked as expected. I'm excited to take advantage of PHP5's features and OOP. I actually tried releasing a script of mine that would only run on php5 earlier this year, but that kind of back fired as not many people could run it, so I had to change it to work on php4 and re-release it. As soon as February hits(maybe even before), I'll be releasing stuff that won't run on php4. |

My host has an option to switch to PHP 5 but I´m pretty sure some of my older modules wouldn´t work afterthat. This means I have to remove a popular modul and the most of my users wouldn´t be happy about this.
I´ll switch to PHP 5 with an other site at the end of the year or 2008. |

My older sites are still on php4, but new ones are coming online with php5. As almost everything I build is on RavenNuke I'm not so worried about switching over to php5 on the older sites. I'll probably do that sometime in the next few months, when I have two seconds to rub together to test some of my very old addons.
What I am worried about is mysql 5! There is a type of strict mode, which can be turned off/changed in the my.ini file but without access to that file I think people on shared hosting are going to have problems. In anycase, my host is recommending I stay with mysql 4 for the time being. |

Hhhmmm, interesting. I know that we have had a few minor problems with mySQL5 default values and NOT NULLS along the way, but we definitely fix those as we run into them. I hadn't done any research on this "strict mode". Looks like I'll have to... Thx for the heads up. |

Now those are novel ideas! As always, dj, you are the leading (or is that "bleeding") edge!

My host also has an option to use php5 but with my luck my whole site will burst into flames if i try to use it. I think i'll throw up a ravennuke site on one of my other 7 domains and test the waters first.
All hail ravenphpscripts.

Ok, first experience with running a forum poll and it doesn't work all that well. LOL! Forum threads are just too active and I have to keep bumping this. |

Actually it is not difficult to run both in the same hosted environment. Raven continues to support that even with his hosting. I tried just now to look up the end of life notice on PHP4 from http://www.php.net but the site was not responding.
Is it easy to learn PHP6? I suspect that it might be easier than PHP4 to PHP5. I only say this because the handling of classes was a big chance between 4 and 5. But, its mostly incremental changes, not wholesale language swap-outs. So, no, it shouldn't be too difficult to learn. |

Well, too bad that you are stuck with that host. Like I said, Raven's running both simultaneously for his clients to help with their transition. Sounds like they don't know what they are doing or are too cheap/lazy. |
