I have searched and searched and obviously not in the right place.
Any ideas where I can comment that out?

open your phpbb2 template under you /themes/YOUR-THEME directory.

Find a template file named after index.tpl

then, you will see who is online section.

Delete it. Then you will not see it.

Independently on your template, you may modify your forum rendering file under /modules/fourms/includes/functions... .php

If you have trouble still there, then I will post again in details.
