Link only to appear on the index page ?

Hello all, I want to add an external link to my left panel but only want it to appear on the index page and not site wide, does anyone know of any code that I can add to the link to achieve this please?

What do you mean by "left panel".

Sorry I mean most themes have the left and right sides, I mean link code to go within a block in the left panel that only can be seen on the index page and no other page.
