I was wondering why SmartFTP doesn't upload every single upload or stops uploading files when I'm trying to upload many files to my site at once. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm getting sick of it and I'm wondering if there's anything better than SmartFTP out there. Any suggestions or comments?

I use WsFTP and have never had any problems like this. However, my guess would be that [hopefully] it's a configuration option that you may not have set. Have you checked their support forum?

Nope, haven't checked there. I'll go right now. If there's nothing on it, I'll download WsFTP Smile

Thanks Raven,

Well I looked in the SmartFTP forums and it seems like a few other people have this problem but nobody replies to it :-/. I have downloaded WsFTP and I'm uploading as I type. Hope it works good.

Thanks.

You know, FTP clients are funny! I've tried/tested a zillion of them.

I used CuteFTP for years. I swore it was the best!

Then, BulletProof came out, and I used that for a few years. And, I thought that was the best!

Then, as much as I hated WS-FTP, I forced myself to use it, became accustomed to it - now I think it's the best!

LoL! That's the upshot to many years of FTP'ing! Take your pick. Personally, I'm a die-hard WS-FTP Pro fan, but it's an acquired taste. It's like drinking Scotch Whiskey, or dipping Skoals. I recognize that it isn't for everyone, particularly n00bs.

Having said that, I don't really use FTP any more, unless I have to. I use SSH SCP2 with Blowfish encryption to transfer files and maintain my site. If you have shell access, I strongly suggest you do the same.

My 'secure copy' file transfer client of choice is WinSCP. Basically, it's a GUI interface for PuTTY. I can't even remember the last time I used FTP; probably the last time I upgraded my WS-FTP Pro.

WinSCP is cutting-edge stuff. It's a steep learning curve at first, but well worth the effort. It kind of reminds me of the beginning days of WS-FTP. If you decide to try it, I suggest that you run it in 'Norton Commander' mode.

Heh! Norton Commander mode?... I'll bet that peaks the interest of some of our veterans... Wink

I'll have to admit, I like the new Teletubbie interface in WS-FTP Pro 9 better. Before that, WS-FTP, as well as WinSCP both used the 'Norton Commander' style.

Maybe I'll start using WS-FTP Pro again. After all, you can do SSH/Blowfish with it too, and SFTP is a close relative of SCP ... Wink

Been using FlashFXP for quite a while now and have had no problems with it whatsoever.......when I first started with FTP, I used WSFTP, but frankly, I didn't like it compared to a couple others at the time, so I've stayed away from it since......which is probably why I have stuck with FlashFXP all this time.

Bah! I used WS-FTP for a couple of minutes tonight, but I wanted to check my 'uptime' and 'du' the drives. I forgot WS-FTP doesn't have a shell in it or even a console. So, it's back to WinSCP for me.

LoL! That didn't take long!

Anyway, WS-FTP is still nice to have around, in case you don't have shell access...

Hey, talkin' about FTP, did you guys realize you can use Internet Explorer for a FTP client? It's pretty sucky, but almost ever computer in the world has Internet Explorer. So, if you're sitting on a public terminal at work, the library, or whatever, you can always use IE to FTP into your site, in a pinch. Shocked

Here's a snippet from a tutorial I did a while back, if anybody cares... Wink

I only use IE for a FTP client when I'm on a remote terminal, like at work, or at the library, et cetera. Every webmaster should learn to use this feature IMHO. It comes in handy in an 'emergency.' Once you learn how, you can access your web account from practically any computer in the world, by using the 'hidden' FTP client built into Internet Explorer.

It's actually not as bad as you might think. Give it a try. Here's how you do it...
