While it does use default charset of UTF-8, gedit allows you to select the encoding when opening a file from the File>Open menu.

It could be gedit related, but it does not seem to be. It "seems" ...

Interesting. So a remix of the base Ubuntu Gnome version. That being the case how is it so much better? More interested in personal experiences.

Mint is a remix of the latest Ubuntu. Mint 11 is based on Ubuntu 11.04. It stays up to date pretty well. They use gnome as the desktop. They also have a Debian edition which I have not used.

I would fully qualify where you want the tar file to be created. Glad you got rid of the redirect of standard out.. Wink I would think this should work.

Ok now I see where your going. Seriously I use as many gnome based tools as kde here. But its funny I'd always figured you as more the minimalist sort. Guess I was way off there!

Gnome, KDE and XFCE all work well on Ubuntu. Easy to switch sessions if needed. Native Gnome applications will be available in KDE, and native KDE applications will be available in Gnome.

Not sure if that one will work for you M as it's KDE rather than Gnome so if it doesn't there is always visual-regexp

I've installed the above (thanks alot, Raven!) and tested it. it worked fine.
As I didn't like the themes (sorry for that, Raven) - I've removed them all, and uploaded another one which I like.
