http auth has locked all users out of admin

I set the http authorisation to be on, but none of the usernames and password work for any of my admins. I assume the usernames/passwords are written into a config file of some type. As I am locked out on all accounts I can't go in and switch off the http authorisation, so need to edit the file I guess is one the server. What is it called and where is it located?
