I am considering hosting my site from home. What do I need to do this?

I'm assuming you're using PHP-nuke, you'll basically need Apache, PHP and MySQL.

You can get a package like EasyPHP that installs it all for you. Smile

What type of computer should I use. What would be the minimum processor requirements, RAM, Operating system?

Well dont go and buy anything just yet because everything is obsolete at the moment.

PCIexpress is now the industry standard and most suppliers of pc's will fob you off with what we're all using now.

You can either wait a month or two and get a high spec computer using pci and agp, with either a single cpu or dual, or get the latest pciexpress pc's with faster cpu's and memory.

You'd need a 4. processor and a good size hard drive, say 250gig. If you can build your own it would work out cheaper if you went for the pciexpress option.

Even going for one using the older spec stuff like we are all using now, you'd pick up motherboards and processors even memory very cheap in about 4-6mths.

Manufacturers are now producing pciexpress motherboards and all the pre-pciexperss boards are gonna be going for peanuts.

I'm waiting my time to build myself a nice little pciexpress shuttle just after xmas when prices for the new boards come down slightly.

So I shouldn't attempt to use a 450mHz, 128mb computer with a 4 gig HD?

ermm not really although it's not impossible, but the hard drives way too small, and you need to up the ram to 512mb

I'm still using a 1.3mhz duron with 80g and 60g hard drives, and 512 ram, which would do as a server, but its not really gonna be fast enough for what I want to do.

I used an old AMD 400mhz pc with a little 6g hd as a server, it was ok, but it didnt run a site, just a couple of other pc's on a network.

Have you looked at PCSympathy's site? The links at the bottom left of this site in the Recommended Sites block. It's a very useful site for info like this.

I think 4gb space would be more than enough for 1 site. Unless your hosting huge files.
You wouldn't need to worry about AGP or PCI express either as running your own site would not require a gfx card.

All depends on the amount of traffic. Reasonable processor and nice amount of ram and your all set. You would need a fast connection obviously.

As Rage said, easyPHP is pretty good. All comes in 1 handy download.

I use Apache2Triad for hosting my local test sites, but it would also work for hosting a live site. It comes with everything, Apache, mySQL, PHP.

Also sqzdog, you want to have a static IP

While a static IP is preferred, I hosted from my desktop for months with a dynamic IP and used dyndns.org along with ddclient to keep the dns server updated.

I don't recommend using a weak PC, even though it's only one site, PHP-Nuke is not sparingfull with it's resources. Wink
