Latest News/Headlines block??

Hello everyone. In trying to reduce the clutter on my main page, I'd like to go with some sort of Latest News block.
The block I am referring to can be seen Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! Something like this forcing folks to read the content also gears the adsense more towards the stories as well I've found possibly creating more clicks.

I have looked all over and have not been able to find one that even comes close. Does anyone have any ideas? Also looking for a block like the one towards the bottom of the page that has links/downloads info as well. I think these two blocks are stellar and would make for nice center blocks on the main page.

Any ideas, or is it easy to code something like this?
