Several members use a theme that has news items next to each other like:

Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!

its works here but not in my sig?
I would like to change it so they are on top of one another like:

Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!


I haven't even a clue which file to begin editing. Any ideas?

Your theme code may be splitting those into columns. It would probably be in the theme.php file
