In case there weren't already enough hazards at work, we have to deal with Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! - a 9.5 foot allligator. I'll get a photo of the parking lot at my office for an even better view...

One of my co-workers took this photo just outside my office. The building in the background to the right is a Florida Highway Patrol office. In between are a canal that feeds from the Everglades swamp and Florida Highway 84. Behind the FHP office is Interstate 595, which connects to a part of I-75 known appropriately as "Alligator Alley."

About two years ago, a 20 yr-old woman stopped by the canal, less than a mile from my office, to rest while jogging around dusk. She sat on a dock with her feet hanging over the canal. They found her body inside an alligator the next day.

Another friend took this photo about 5 miles from my house. Fun!

Now this is interesting, 9.5 ft, thats a big one. And they are going to do what?

Harvest it, because he's too big to be released into the wild.

If I was one of those cops, I would have been pissed.

I think our preservation of wild animals isnt any better then our mass destruction of animals and such.

We need to stop treating animals like they are beneath us, like we are the thing that will make or break their species. Guess what, Allegators, crocs survived the worst mass extinction ever recorded on this planet, I dont think we are going to break the species ability to survive. We as beings of Greater thinking, notice I said greater and not higher, we should realize that our interaction with species should be that of animals.

A lion wouldnt gift-wrap a leopard that just risked the lives of their cubs and such, that leopard would be road kill.

we as a species need to react as our instincts say, and stop using our greater intelligence to completely undermine mother nature. We are smart, but we are so stupid at the same time.

Well, sorry for the rant, just saw that and had to let it out lol.

kguske, If it was me, time for a move!!!

Been here for 12 years - and I live next to water and closer to the swamp than the ocean, and never had a problem, really - must be the "greater intelligence" that keeps me away from them - and them away from me.

As for harvesting, it is only legal to hunt / kill alligators if you have a license, and these are EXTREMELY limited / hard to get (I only know 1 person that has such a license). However, when alligators - especially those this big - get too close to people, it's more dangerous for them than it is for the people (though more dangerous for household pets). I'm not sure that size, per se, is really why it wasn't released in the wild. But that sure sounds great for a news story!

If properly prepared, the meat is quite tasty, too. Smile

Now you come to mention it, yes it is quite nice.
If you have not done so already, I recommend you try some Ostrich too.

I hope you mean gator boots? Then again, you might look quite fetching in an ostrich feather coat - hmm..... fancy a beer? lol

No sir. Ostrich boots my friend! They are a little softer and better for more formal type attire (as formal as someone wearing cowboy boots can get - lol). Of course, that also means that they scuff easier.
