Hey All,

I hope you're all enjoying the festive season!

Apologies in advance if this posting has not been made in the correct area, but if it has not I am sure admin will relocate it.

I have been wondering this for a while, so decided to make this ultimate posting.

I have used Raven Nuke for a long time, but continue to see the rise of many other CMS systems.

I do understand security is always a concern and something to consider when choosing which CMS to use.

I also note how Nuke appears to have far more back end configuration to deal with, where as other CMS systems appear to be more accessible and usable forthwith, once downloaded and 'taken out of the box'.

I would appreciate some comments and thoughts as to why I should not consider moving to another CMS at this time. Specifically, I note how prevalent Joomla! has become these days and apparently favoured by many etc.

Why should I/should I not consider moving to towards using Joomla!, a CMS which apparently has many features/add ons/ and much development support?

All comments are appreciated, along with any information as to where a similar question may have already been addressed in these forums.

Thanks in advance and again have a great time this December!

E.

Welcome back !

in my opinion if a CMS is favoured by many doesn´t mean you should not consider many other important facts like support, security, seo etc, etc.
Besides this it´s always a personal decision and if you are not a programmer you don´t know really how good the used code is.
I have tested months ago around 10 different CMS and found only one other which I gave a chance besides RavenNuke. It´s not Joomla.

Hi Dawg & Susan,

Thanks for your replies.

Dawg, I have searched Google, as sugested, but do not really see much informatio about what you have quoted.

While I am ready to accept Nuke is exceptional when it coes to the security Nukesentinel etc offers, I do not understand why so many people would use a CMS product (such as Joomla), if it is so flawed and so vulnerable?

From what I can see, there is an imeasurable number of websites using Joomla! as a CMS, so I fail to see what they would want to if it was so poor?

I suspect some of the users of Joomla probably have never heard of RavenNuke, or may be even phpNuke and probably haven't considered using another CMS and probably don't know any better.

Of course we are always going to biased, but I think you can't beat the support you receive here. When I look at Joomla previously I always found it difficult to receive a timely response.

Jakec,

Thanks for your reply.

All this information/feedback is good, moreover appreciated.

Indeed I was quite prepared for the responses to be a little biased towards Raven Nuke and this is of course, quite understandable. That said, my posting is meant to be a positive thing, because I need answers and reasons to give (over inquisitive) potential new clients.

More recenty, because some clients either think Joomla! is the latest cool term/word to use, or they have learned their competitiors, contacts or friends are using Joomla!, I am being asked why I am not and why the CMS I do use, (Raven Nuke), is a better alternative etc.

Additionally, when these people see the latest Joomla! Templates and designs, they think they look more modern and so the CMS must be more up to date, advanced, trendy, etc.

While I am generally considering a move towards Joomla!, (due to my clients questioning all this), I would like to respond to them, advising why such a move would be far from an ideal/cool decission to make.

More comments and feedback please! boxingself

emmaphp, Hi, I use both Joomla and RavenNuke. Basically what I do find is Joomla has much more features, components (modules), plugins, modules (blocks) and flexibility with it's lay out then what I have experienced with RavenNuke. When a site is done by Joomla, one usually can not tell what CMS is being used. With any Nuke/Nuke fork, nearly all the time you can tell is nuke based. Of course there is nothing more secure then RN, period! it's faster, and RN Rocks! The huge benefit of RN it has the best CMS support in the world! another period! with Joomla you just need to make sure of two things. You update as soon as they have a new release (usually takes 3 minutes tops), and two is you back up your site and data. There is a trade off, but the rewards far out weigh the possible consequences, which in any case you can restore or fix. What you should do is install it on a test site, play with it, nothing like taking it out for a ride to see if it's for you.

Regards,
jc

The only other thing I would say is that I've found it more difficult to customise.

I support sites running both RavenNuke and Joomla, and I've installed and tested several others. Joomla is much more difficult to develop / customize, which is probably why there are more commercial addons for Joomla than open source addons. Nuke has many more open source addons, and it's usually pretty easy to integrate other scripts (e.g. phpBB, Coppermine, osCommerce, etc.). Joomla currently has more attention from the media, but that might increase the likelihood of also getting attention from malicious attackers...

Joomla does have a nice catalog of enhancements (plugins), and I'd like to develop something like that for Nuke, though there are some sites that provide this in some forms. I haven't seen any good theme / template sites for Joomla, again - probably because most are commercial. I have seen both modules and templates sites for Drupal, and there are several theme sites for Nuke, including http://themes.fornuke.com.

I haver a customer I have been battling this mess for. In my reading I have seen posts from 1000's of Joomla sites attacked with it. Lots of Gallery Sites aattacked. Lots of Wordpress, Lots of Simple Machines, Lots of PHPBB2 and 3. I do not recall seeing a single RN site attacked with it. There are some that have had Gallery attacked inside of Nuke...but none have attacked the base RN.

One of the other things I have always like about RN is that the codeing is straight forward. It is not rocket science to be able to do about anything.

It is very secure.

The support is excellent.

I think overall there are many CMS's in the world. It is a lot of what you get used to. I have been on RN so long I don't even really have to think about it.....I just know it can be done...or can't be done.

Just my .02
