I never had the chance before to select one but now I need to find the best.

Is it Horde, SquirrelMail or RoundCube ?

I use roundcube, pretty close in appearance and function to a real email application.

I have used Horde and SquirrelMail in the past. They were both fine.

I use IMAP instead of POP3 and then it really doesn't matter.
Just point some mail client (kmail, thunderbird, etc.) on some computer (linux, windows, osx) and i never loose my email.

When there is no mail client laying around on some computer is use both: roundcube and squirrelmail

Yes I have to agree with djmaze, IMAP is great because you always have a backup of your emails.

IMAP with Roundcube + some Roundcube extensions that allow access to multiple accounts in one session. It isn't perfect, but it works pretty well.
