hey there all big helps in Raven Nuke,

I'm experiencing a problem where my site doesn't send the activation email to the new registered users, I'm running RN 2.40.01 so that is the latest version of Raven Nuke i think.

I've read some of the posts about the mail function and heard some stuff about SMTP and some about webhost settings which are blocking the initial PHP mail() function.

Now I have a very strange request (IMO) which might be asked a bit too much, but please bear with me. I would like all emails sent from the site to be sent by a registered Hotmail account which i registered for clan purposes.

example: new user activation email would be sent by xxxxxxx@hotmail.com towards the new user in question.

I figure i would need some SMTP for this but i'm an utter PHP noob and would be in need of some assistance in this.
PHP.ini files? where can i find those if needed to change?

the following information might be of need for you guys aswell:
I'm hosting my site by www.xtreemhost.com, this is a free webhost which has blocked out email accounts on the free plans.

if this topic is out of place, please close it straight away because i don't want to be a nuisance, but i'd be very grateful if any of the masterminds could take a look into this.

best regards,
rrclansite

If your webhost is blocking email accounts you are out of luck. Find a different host.

Only if your users were to register through one of the social sites. You will still have issues if they use the standard register system.

What webhost are you using? Maybe we can find out why your mail function is not working.

Never mind, I see your host above. They say sendmail is active on free accounts. The email account you have set under preferences as your Administrator Email: is what shows up as the email address for registrations.

The TegoNuke Mailer gives you options to use mail(), SMTP or SendMail. I would try that first and see if that solves you issue.

SMTP is working pretty fine now.

summary of what I did to make things work (for all the people who might need this post in the future):

1) Use the TegoNuke Mailer with SMTP configuration
2) Use Gmail's free SMTP server with following details:
a) SMTP server: ssl://smtp.gmail.com
b) SMTP helo: ssl://smtp.gmail.com
c) SMTP port: 465
d) SMTP authentication: yes
e) SMTP username: (youraccount@gmail.com)
f) SMTP password: the password for your gmail account
3) configure the forum settings by doing the following:
a) go to administration menu
b) select Forums under the modules administration
c) go to configuration under the General admin part
d) scroll down towards email settings and implement the following:
*)SMTP server adress: ssl://smtp.gmail.com
*)SMTP username: youraccount@gmail.com
*)SMTP password: the password for your gmail account

I felt like I should summarize this part for people who might need it in the future and I hope that I can help people out if they end up here in this post through the Search funtion of this wonderfull community

big thanks to Nuken for pointing me towards here: http://www.xtreemhost.com/forums/index.php/topic,145.0.html
and help solve my problem this way

best regards,
