There's demand for Gallery modules; I've released 2 and I think nuken has also released 2. I just wasn't sure there would be significant enough demand for ffmpeg to justify getting side-tracked but since you have already done it, it's a moot point Wink

Mine are just simple GPL Picasa galleries taken from the web and turned into modules. I had a charities website that I do for free that wanted an easy gallery. I did a couple for them and just figured I would release them to the public. I'm with you guys on the ffmpeg. It's nice and all, but most will not be able to use it. Looks good btw....

Really? I had it pegged that more than just a basketful run their own servers in which case they could put FFMPEG on if they wanted to. I do understand a lot of people are on shared hosts and is why I have it fall back to static video thumbnails.

Since both of you released galleries... what things did y'all learn along the way or any helpful information / advice you could provide? (no limits)

I ran a simple test to see the total execution time to process an image & video on my server.

Settings:

Resize image to 800x600 if size exceeds those dems
Thumbsize - 150x150

Server:

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Php 5.3.2
P4 2.4ghz
2gb 800 DDR2

Image:

Dems - 2848x2128
Filesize - 1.29mb

Process:

1: Create thumb
2: Resize image
3: Move image to its album
4: Update database

Results:

Size after resize - 529kb
1 image - Total time: 1.6862049102783

1: Generate thumbnail using FFMPEG

Remember, this is NOT the time it takes to UPLOAD + PROCESS... this is only the time it takes MY server setup to process to media whilst being inserted into the gallery. You server setup will dictate the time it takes to process.

Did you happen to monitor Resources like Ram and CPU while you were at it?

No because I'm at the office (server is at home) and I'm not really testing hardcore to watch everything. I'll post my php settings later because I've edited them directly to allow more headroom for bigger files and longer execution time by php.

When I do run serious tests... I'm going to throw about 500 images into the same process. (which I honestly don't believe "should" be done.. but I will to see if I can break anything)

Do you know your server specs by chance?

Also... to make sure this is crystal clear... this will not have a function to allow users to upload. Reason being... user management would have to be implemented and I'm not going there unless the demand is there for it. Only the admin back end has uploading so it won't be as if you have multiple people hammering the server processing media.

Ahh now see I would rather have the ability to use User upload privileges than almost anything else. I understand the level of complexity that adds but it is something you should consider at least adding later.

Ah ha... now I understand. It is something I've floated from the beginning but that adds a new HUGE complex set of problems to work through.

I'm not ruling it out for the future... but that all depends on the financial support I get from users. I'm releasing it free of charge but $ greases the skids for future development.

If only you've heard the butt chewings I've taken so far developing this and the endless days and nights of frustration I've had during this whole thing.

Edit... even as I think about it now... if users did upload... it still wouldn't be "processed" until the admin approved them. The users would upload to the temp directory and the media would wait for admin action. Again... only one invoking the processing. (wouldn't want a bunch of child porn or something pushed into your gallery)

For this round of 205 images... Combined process time = 90 seconds to process into the gallery.

Due to the way datatables is coded, the gallery will only process MAX 100 files at a time. This is actually a good thing though as it prevents the user from overloading the script with to much processing.

Note** For this test I loaded 205 images and attempted to process all of them at the same time. This is how I found out the "quirk" that actually works pretty well in my opinion.

I've been searching for an alternative to Gallery2 - way too much trouble for my use.
And finally (thanks to Nuken), I'm pointed to your threads.
Yes, it appears that there is light at the end of the tunnel AND I don't hear a train!!!

I look forward to seeing this very much.
Sounds like your also homeschooling too - definitely more important, quite a challenge, and a great blessing!

Thanks for the interest in this project webservant!

I do not homeschool, although I wish I could, but rather I work a full time job not related to coding and am a relatively new father / husband (6 years) so this is one of the most important times in our marriage/fatherhood.

I try my best to devote time to hobby coding but due to the economy and life in general, it's not always possible to put as much time in as I wish.

At the same time, Here recently I've been hired by a company to manage their website on the side and through that connection I have more work slated to be coming my way. Because of this... I've been working on remodeling my website to be more business like and have had to divert my attention to that as well as the new website I'm managing.

Where I hope this leads in the long run is a position where I can work from home and spend my time doing what I love to do best.... coding.

As for this project... It has taken a back seat in the past month due to the whirlwind of stuff going on but all is starting to level out and I've just about finished my website and have a little bit more to go cleaning up and reorganizing the new clients website.

This does NOT mean this project is dead by any stretch... call it a breather if you will from the tedious task of infinite loops and media management.

I still only have 2 "major" tasks to tackle but those two tasks are nothing compared to the hurdles I've already overcome. They shouldn't be much trouble as I've resolved most of the protocols and how I imagined this gallery should work.

I'm still working on it.. I promise!!
