Learn to program with PHP

I would like to move beyond the "cut an paste" method. What is the best way for me to learn (teach myself at home, in my spare time) how to program with php? Manuals? Books?

I don't want to progress to any great level, but it would be nice to understand what I am looking at, and to be able to customize some of the code. Or to design my own blocks, etc.

I am totally clueless now and have to make one small change and upload it to the site to see what it did. Most of the time I need to delete what I just did cause it messed something up. Not only is this time consuming, but my head hurts from banging it on my desktop in frustration.

Ok, sorry. I did a seach but guess I didn't use the right keywords, since that thread did not show up in my results.

EDIT: Ok, I see what I am doing wrong. I am using the Google search instead of scrolling down to just search your forums.
