This is one of those so called 'dumb' questions.

I have been doing this in the Admin CP most days now on our site for over 15 months. This morning total optimisation just went over the 10 meg mark

I do not really know
what this actually does
or why
or what effect it has
or if it is worth doing each day,
or should it be done in phpmysql.
With out getting too techy could someone please explain?

Hi, Steptoe

I ´m often hanging around in my database and optimize the tables several times with phpMyAdmin. But it can be done through NukeSentinel depends on the version or just through the administration. One reason why I do this is the overflow in different tables e.g. table nuke_session. I have some blocks like who is online and who is where and the display sometimes not the correct number thats the other reason why I optimize and repair often. If there are a lot of mods in the forums it´s also helpful, but if you have a small website and only some members and a few visitors daily I quess it´s not necessary to optimize so often. In the database you can also check only for tables having overhead and optimize this tables.

It's really not worth doing every day, unless you are really cramming for space. Mostly its to store the temporary overhead data that MySQL generates.
I really only optimize it as part of a routine backup.. that's it

Just my 2 cents but I do mine about once per month.

Keep in mind that NukeSentinel only optimizes NukeSentinel tables. Ther is really little use in optimizing more than once a week at most. Unless you have a super active forum.

So what does it do load site faster? anything like that?
I go into admin each morning the opt db icon is there, so I hit it lol
10 meg is not much in about 460 days so I assumed each day was over kill lol
Space is not a problem...the progs dbs files etc are only about 650 meg on a partition is 15 gig....
Its the backups I make each day (auto) of that partition to another machine that generally take up space even at approx 50% compression.

It reorganizes the index for added records, deleted records, changed records alter the index structure. This reorgs it and also compresses unused space.
