Sorry for coming to 'the party' late...

As I was reading through this thread, the only thing that came to mind was -- how many themes does someone need? 10? 500? $1 worth? $20 worth? And...

I don't know about you guys, but I work on 'my' themes as much as I do the PHP-Nuke core files -- maybe more. If I paid someone for themes, I would expect some level of support, not simply access to a repository of 500 more 'headaches'.

Personally, even if a site just requires registration to download files, I'll look elsewhere. I can find themes using Google faster than filling out registration forms.

If you'll pardon the pun, why buy the cow when the milk is free -- especially if you're the one doing all the milking? If someone else is doing all the work, and you're simply updating your files, that's a different matter. However, if YOU are the one doing all the work on an unsupported product, why pay for it -- especially when the farmer doesn't see a dime of the money?

It would appear that they have now removed their subscription system and introduced advertising instead! Very Happy

i would say they were rather forced to. They have all my themes there. some of which are commercial. like many designers i am just sick of people who does these sorta things.
when queried he was arrogant enough to justify the pricing by saying "the price is for the hard work of compiling the themes". lets say he is right, in that case dont i and the other designers deserve a share for it to make the themes for him to compile? Shocked

GPL or otherwise doing something like that is basically wrong. people should have more respect for other people's creativity. Evil or Very Mad

VinDSL, thanks for the humorous and accurate analogy!

Slashdot, as a developer, I empathize with you. I know some of your stuff is commercial, but the GPL specifically allows for charging to provide a download of others' works. That said, I'm glad they ended the subscription model...I think they will make more off advertising than they would have with subscriptions...

haha i don't know much about farming but let's say the farmer is "SlashDot" and he does all the job and feed the cow and all that stuff and the one who get paid for the milk is all-themes.com (not the case anymore..) then the cow must actualy be a "GNU" filter for "GPL etc.." i might be totaly wrong here but as i said i don't know much about farming... but if i'm right about the cow then i don't think it's a very nice cow Laughing

Slashdot,

Perhaps you should consider releasing your Commercial themes with the graphics packaged seperately. This way you can retain the copyright and license for the graphics, as they will not be covered by the GPL and therefore people will not be able to offer them for download on their sites, without your permission. Unfortunately it's not retrospective, but may be useful for future reference.

I think what I'm saying above is correct, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Further information can be found in the following post by djmaze: Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login!
