Questions about categories

I am trying to set up various categories for content. I have say baseball and football. However when I activate the category block it shows neither one. I can add stories, like to baseball, and activate the catefory block and it will show the story but not broken down by the various categories. Is it supposed to or not? Can someone point me to a site with this mod working so I can see if it is what I am expecting?

Just to clarify, for which module do you wish to use categories: news, forums, downloads, weblinks, content, etc.? AFAIK, there is no categories function that spans modules.

What I am hoping to do is have a block with the various categories listed, ie baseball, football, track, etc. These would show up in the block, then when clicking on say baseball, you would be taken to all the articles in regards to that category. Does this make since or is there another way to accomplish it?
