n00b question here...I just spent a bunch of time installing 7.9 and tweaking it so things look pretty. Support sucked, but it was only $10 so I thought I would give it a shot.
Because I don't want to be hacked, I looked into security and discovered Sentinel as something I should definitely have.
Of course, I see RavenNuke and think 'Whoop azz! Built-in security!'
PostNuke was supposed to be a stripped down version (albeit more secure) of phpNuke. If I understand correctly, Raven and Post Nuke projects are both security forks? How fundamentally does RavenNuke tweak with security in terms of being able to run various mods written for phpNuke? Does it have a tendency to break themes, or make upgrading phpBB2 more difficult?
If this has been answered somewhere else, please link it in your response, and accept my apologies for wasting your time.
Thanks,
MrE. |

apologies accepted...
no seriously....
the nuke version you bought and installed is vunerable and therefor your site can be hacked...
the ravennuke version is based on the 7.6 whitch is still the best version and is completely patched with newest file/edits .,....security speaking..
and comes with pre-installed sentinel... |

Welcome. Without a doubt, RavenNuke beats phpnuke hands down for both security, functionality and support. And cost (thought it is recommended that you donate if you use it).
At this point, RavenNuke isn't a fork. It's an enhanced distribution, based on PHP-Nuke 7.6. Versions 7.7 and higher of PHP-Nuke actually removed security protection! 7.9 was an attempt to put some of it back.
I haven't been following postnuke that closely, but it is not compatible with PHPnuke. It requires different themes, different modules, etc.
RavenNuke uses the patches from NukeFixes, as well as NukeSentinel and other fixes made by the RavenNuke team, to secure PHP-Nuke. If a module uses non-standard database access methods or allows uploads of bad files, no distribution or fork will protect against that, nor will NukeSentinel.
RavenNuke has minimal forums mods that affect themes. |

Sorry, hitwalker, I got distracted in the middle of typing the response and didn't notice that you had responded. |

Should have hit refresh to see if anyone had written anything in the interim. Thanks very much, guys.
To complicate matters, I am not in charge of the linux box, and use a hosted mysqladmin.

Thanks.
So I guess the next logical question is PostNuke vs. RavenNuke? I didn't want PostNuke because I have heard it has a tendency to break things. I'm hoping Raven is the logical answer.
Will most modules and themes validated for 7.6 work without tweaks? I'm getting really short of time to bring this new site live. :\
Thanks again,
MrE. |

Crap...if I can pay $10 for no support from phpNuke (boy that just chaps my hide...should have researched more) I will *definitely* be contributing here once my site is running. |

Don't be too hard on yourself, eharmonic. Many people do that before realizing they're getting untested software and no support. Sounds like a good deal to me...
There is a whole team of people, led by Raven and Montego, that enhances, tests and supports RavenNuke - so anything you donate will be well worth it.
Regarding your question about modules / themes: yes, most will work with RavenNuke without modification. We are considering some forum mods that will require theme changes, but expect to provide instructions on how to modify your theme(s).
One other thing I forgot to mention (since you brought up "short of time"): Raven's installation routine is one of the best I've seen for installing a CMS. VERY nice... |
