Correct file permissions?

What are the correct file permission on a linux server? For folders, files etc? html, cgi, php?

Folders = 755
Files = 644 (html and php should work just fine)
cgi = ? I would start with 644 and see if it works.

If a script needs to write to the file system, the directory that it is writing to might have to be 777. I start there to make sure it works and then I start taking away permissions, starting at the "world" level and keep backing off until it no longer works. That way I know its a good as its going to get.

Actually, sorry about that, with cgi, you may need the execute bit. Again, I would start, though, from the left and work yourself to the right in terms of setting the execute bit.
