Major problem on my site-hoster has suspended it-any ideas ?

Hi,
I just got this eMail from my hoster:

Today we have been experiencing VERY high server loads, all because of your
web site. As a result I have temporarily suspended the account until we can
find the issue and solve it.

When I recently tried to access your site, I got the main page in just over
20 seconds, and caused the server load to peak at >500, which is dog slow.

Looking at the server status and you can see that all the traffic is
directed to your page. When I suspend your site, the server load goes back
it its normal <1.

Did you recently update phpnuke, or is there perhaps a new exploit that your
site is being targeted for?

I am going to restore your account, but temporarily disable your home page
while we figure this out.

I don't know if it's an exploit, or a problem with a corrupted table, or
what, but lets see if we can figure this out and get you back in operation
soon.

I haven't updated since I went to the RavenNuke Distro about 6 months ago.....

Where do I start with this ?
Or has anybody any ideas ???

any chance you can tell more about your site?

What was it about?
What extra's did you had installed ?
Did members had special rights....like uploading something?
etc....

It's called "MAME ROM Links"

URL is http://www.mameromlinks.com

It had links to ROMs for the MAME emulator.

It gets about 1000-1500 unique hits per day, so it's active enough I suppose...

It was hacked about 6 months ago when I had regular PHPNuke installed and that's why I installed RavenNuke.

I have 2 other mods on the site, and I'm the only superuser.

The members couldn't upload any files.

Although, under the reviews section there were a crap load of comments that I hadn't cleared in a while. They were comments placed by bots - the usual crap about Viagra etc....

I'd say the DB tables just need to be cleared down from all the crap, but I can't get at phpMyAdmin as the hosting company have temporarily taken the site down.....
I do have FTP access, but there's only a basic "root" dir now, and my original root dir is called "root.old"

I could reinstall it I suppose and have a look there....

From the hosters email it seem that it's just slowing everything down. If the DB was very full and wasn't being maintained properly that would slow it down a lot.....

What do you reckon ?

Do you need any other info ?

well a lot of things are possible but if its no script that runs with your install then its not easy to slow a site down by just some links...
But we also dont know if your host is telling the truth either.

But a db of 50mb ?
What table is the largest one ?

How would I check for a script that runs with the site ? Do you mean something that is getting kicked off from index.php and running ?
(BTW, phpMyAdmin is still uploading - I've only FTP access, not SSH)

33MB in all. I'll clean it up anyhow, but any ideas as to what else I can llok at to see if there's a problem ?

Actually the "nuke_stats_date" is pretty big - what's in that table ? Or more to the point, can I empty it ?
I've emptied the comments tables

I seriously doubt it is the database.

There are quite a number of robots attempting exploits on phpNuke and other PHP based systems. You may need access logs to determine where they are all coming from, but I suspect if you block libwww-perl user agent then you will see a decrease on the hits on your site.

How would I do this ? And would it have any negative effects on the site ?
